According to the latest industry survey, the National Asphalt pavement Association (NAPA) conducted a collection and reuse of more than 100m tons of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in the United States during 2018 with the Federal Expressway Administration. Save about 61.4 million cubic yards of landfill space. The survey, conducted by NAPA during each construction season since 2009, has consistently found that nearly 100 per cent of RAP has been used for useful uses, mainly new asphalt pavements.
Nationwide, the average RAP level of new asphalt pavements in 2018 was 21.1%, the highest level since the survey began in 2009.The survey found that in 2018, 82.2 million tons of RAP and 1.05 million tons of recycled asphalt tile (RAS) were used in 389.3 million tons of new asphalt mixtures in the United States.
Another 8.8 million tons of RAP and RAS are used as aggregates for cold mix asphalt and other road construction activities. The survey also found that by the end of 2018, the country had stockpiled about 111.7 million tons of RAP and RAS, for future use.
Although national usage was not taken into account, those surveyed reported the recovery of approximately 1.8 million tons of recovered tyre rubber, steel and blast furnace slag; cellulose fiber; In 2018, about 12.3 million tons of asphalt pavement mixtures were made of other recycled and waste materials.
In the 2018 construction season, more than 85 million tons of recycled materials-mainly RAP and ras-- were used in new asphalt pavement mixtures, an increase of 7.6 per cent over 2017. Using RAP and RAS alone saves more than $2.9 billion more than using raw materials.

Nationwide, the average number of new asphalt pavements built in 2018 was 21.1 per cent. This is the highest level since the Napa survey began in 2009.
The survey also found that the United States added 389.3 million tons of asphalt mixture in 2018, using 82.2 million tons of RAP and 1.05 million tons of recycled asphalt tiles.
Another 8.8 million tons of RAP and RAS are used as aggregates for cold mix asphalt and other road construction activities. In addition, the survey also found that by the end of last year, the United States had stockpiled about 111.7 million tons of RAP and RAS, for future use.
The asphalt pavement industry also continues to use warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology.

In 2018, WMA technology was used to produce 157.4 million tons of asphalt pavement mixture. More than half of that tonnage is produced at low temperatures, which means less energy is needed in the manufacturing process, according to NAPA.
The most commonly used WMA technology is plant-based foaming, which injects a small amount of water into the asphalt during the production process. Napa says many environmental, worker safety and building benefits have been achieved through the use of WMA technology.
